Pure White Hope
On Saturday, January 18 at 10 am; 27 people from northern Alberta Canada met during a much prayed for snowstorm at Bethel Christian reformed Church in Edmonton. And no it was not for mass! It was to become a volunteer referee for the Canadian Motorsport Racing Club events.
As the snowstorm continued to rage outside the volunteers were undergoing a 7 hour training course by former C.M.R.C. representative Jerry Nelson and Associates. The course mainly covered motocross Rules and regulations, but unlike most other Referee courses this one had a unique supplement. With the help of Jerry’s Associates, they presented for the first time, a formal look at refereeing an endurance ice race (relay racing motorcycles and quads on a 5-20 km unmarked ice track for 6 – 24 hours non stop) That’s why this group had been praying for a snowstorm, and even more so for our drought stricken farmers.
Approximately 8 experienced members of the group met weekly over the past few months to establish some guidelines and formal training for volunteers who would be present at the upcoming endurance ice racing series. Jerry and his associates were overwhelmed at the large number of volunteers who were in attendance; it just proves that northern Albertans are committed to make the sport of endurance ice racing a fun and safe event.
The snowstorm raged on through to the following Sunday, making travel difficult. Non the less an even larger volunteer group assembled in the middle of a lake some 60 kilometers from Edmonton in white out conditions. There were some 20 volunteer ice race teams (80 people) and about 18 newly trained referees practicing what they learned the day before, in theory only.
In three short 40 minute long races, the group was able to practice: staging, penalty calls, lap count failures and finish line procedures. Many of the riders purposely caused minor fouls on the track to benefit the referee’s practical training. Even a fake injuring accident to test their ability in first aid response, and emergency stopping the race, and restarting it by means of the new electronic lap count system. A hundred volunteers in a white out on the same weekend of out annual indoor motorcycle show.
It says lot about the spirit of ice racers and their helpers. Thankfully all returned home safely despite the snowstorm. Thank you very much everyone for: traveling far, missing the motorcycle show, and braving the storm. Special thanks to God for giving safety, ice, snow and the best people. If you would like a picture of Sundays practice race? Just tune your TV to a channel that is not broadcasting and it should look the same. We do have a photo of the group who trained at the church.
Signed
Thankful

The Innovator Award
The "Innovator" Award:
This award was first introduced in 1993. It is awarded annually to the team which shows the most innovation and ingenuity during the 24 hour Numb Bum to finish or resume the race with the bike/quad that they started the race with.
(The plaque will remain the property of the Numb Bum and will be displayed at a local dealership)
We want your Innovator stories!
We have the names of previous Innovator alumni, now we want to hear the stories behind the award. If you were on a team or know why they received the Innovator award for their respective year, please write us, we will include your story on the web page as we strive to bring the history of the Numb Bum 24 to life! Onoway Outlaws | In 2001 the Onoway Outlaws won the award. Two laps into the race the
connecting rod on their 250R broke, so they swapped tires with their
parts quad, which had no rear shock, and rode it for about 14 hours until they lost a ring. Then they took the top end off the quad they had started the race with and slapped it on the parts machine. The team spent a good six hours rebuilding machines and swapping parts, and came in second last, but finished the race. Bike #034 |
Alberta Cycle built 20 tires to replace flats. They had to send people into town to purchase more screws and tires. As well, 1hr into the race their transmission blew and they suffered the popular HID light problems. The tranny blew while in reverse gear. "Mike, what were you doing in reverse?" |
